GA WEST MUNICIPAL HOSPITAL LAUNCHES CERVICAL CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

Cervical cancer is a type of cancer that occurs in the cells of the cervix which is the lower part of the uterus that connects to the vagina. Various strains of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV), a sexually transmitted infection, play a role in causing this cancer. When exposed to HPV, the body’s immune system typically prevents the virus from doing harm. the virus survives for years, contributing to the process that causes some cervical cells to become cancer cells.

This has become a significant concern for the Ghana Medical Women Association, which seeks to embark on a Cervical Cancer awareness to give free screening to all women across the country. As the month of January is known for cervical cancer awareness, the Ghana Medical Women association together with the family planning unit of the GWMH launched the CERVICAL CANCER AWARENESS MONTH, which also had sponsorship from YAZZ (Synlab Ghana Ltd).

The event was graced with dignitaries from the Ghana Medical Women association, the head of the district directorate of the Ga West Municipality, representatives from Ga West Municipality, brands Ambassador for YAZZ, representatives from the Ga West Muslims community as well as management members of GWMH.

This year’s event started with an opening drama display by students from Amasaman Senior High Technical school (AMASTECH), who gave the house a brief show on some of the causes of cervical cancer and its adverse effects on society. Also, the program had representation from Municipal Assembly JHS students, Ghana National Tailors and Dressmakers Association, and teachers from various schools.
